NJX EVENTS
AND PROGRAMS
NJX Personal
Development Program (PDP)
The NJX Personal
Development Program (PDP) was developed and introduced by NJX Director of Soccer
Rich Pekmezian. The purpose of PDP is for serious players to advance their
athletic and soccer abilities on their own or in small groups that they the
players arrange themselves.
The modern athlete is confronted with a huge potential obstacle. There is simply
not a lot of free play time or time spent without the supervision and oversight
of an adult coach or parent. It is during these unsupervised, alone time or
small group experiences that discovery and improvement occurs. But in today's
world, kids do not get any alone time programming. PDP addresses this issue head
on.
The PDP is a written document between 10-16 pages presented to each NJX player.
The document outlines the importance of goal setting and the importance of
working on one's own. We feel it's important that the player and parent
understand why PDP is important. Once they understand why it's important we then
get into what is important. The PDP curriculae covers physical and technical
development. And within the physical curricula we address: stretching and
warm-up; hydration and nutrition; aerobic and anaerobic fitness, strength,
speed, agility and quickness among other topics. Within the technical curricula,
we address: passing, receiving, ball striking, preparation touches, ball moves,
fakes and feints, juggling among other topics.
Each team's PDP is customized to the age and level of the team. The NJX coach is
expected to know their teams and as such the PDP is intended to be a stretch of
the team's abilities in each of the focus areas.
Each team is held accountable for PDP effort and players are encouraged to
journal their workouts and periodically share their effort with their coach and
the Director of Soccer.
When a player migrates through NJX and prepares to court college soccer coaches,
he/she will be well prepared to demonstrate on the field and on paper how
committed they are as an athlete. This will in most instances be the extra edge
that the player will have when being compared with other potential recruits.
There is not a single advanced soccer player who becomes great by just playing
games and training with the team. Excellence in any endeavor requires focus and
sacrifice on one's own.
PDP was developed by Rich Pekmezian with considerable influence and experience from Bob Reasso (Rutgers
University former Head Coach and former coach of Rich Pekmezian), Jack Weber (former
Rutgers teammate and who has amassed over 400 wins as boys' coach at
Montclair High School),
Dave Masur (former
Rutgers teammate and now St. John's Head Coach), and Anson Dorrance
(University of North
Carolina Coach).
Much of the
philosophy of the PDP is influenced by Coach Dorrance's curricula for the women's
program at the University of North Carolina and
from his book Training Soccer Champions.
To further appreciate the benefits of the PDP,
we encourage you to view the feedback provided by players and parents on our
Testimonial Page.
